4 Steps For a Clean Garage

Garages have many different purposes. Not only do we use them for our cars but also for storing tools, garden equipment, car repair items, etc. Over time this space may get cluttered and dirty. Our team at Neighborhood Garage Door of Austin have put together tips to help you get your garage space clean and organized.

1. Take Everything Out and Sort Through It

The first thing you should do is pick a day when the weather’s going to be nice. Then get to work, start by taking everything out of your garage that is not bolted down. While you do this, make different piles for your items. Sort each thing into what you want to keep, what to donate to charity and what needs to be sold.

By doing this, you eliminate items you no longer need, keeping your garage space less cluttered and gives you more room to enjoy your space.

2. Sweep, Remove Stains, Dust, and Paint

Once everything is out of your garage it is much easier to clean. Start in a corner and sweep all the dirt and debris out of your garage. If there are any floor stains, those can be removed with an absorbent solution or stripper depending on the stain.

Make sure to also wipe down all the walls and remove any cobwebs that are hanging from the ceiling.  Once the walls are clean, add a fresh coat of latex paint to give your garage a fresh and clean feeling as well as prevent mildew. Also, caulk around any windows to prevent rain from entering.

3. Add Storage

Having proper places for your stuff is very helpful. Everyone has different storage needs, so assess your items and decide what is best for you. Getting items up off the floor will keep your space safe and clutter free. Some storage items to consider are:

  • Shelves- great for large items, boxes, and bins
  • Storage Bins- keeps like items together
  • Hooks- hang ropes, extension cords, and garden equipment
  • Pegboard- easy access to tools that you use often
  • Toolboxes- for screwdrivers, wrenches, hammers, etc.
  • And more….

Having proper places for your stuff is very helpful. By adding these different storage items you can keep your garage clean and organized.

4. Reassemble Your Garage

Now that you have your garage fresh and clean it is time to put everything in its place and organize your space. Make sure to clearly mark any bins and boxes as you fill them so you know exactly what is inside.

You should also continue to purge any more items that you will not use and add to your piles to donate or sell.

They sent Doug Fussell out to my house on the day after Christmas! I had only called them three days before! Doug was a premier technician, very thorough and very efficient. I expected him to take two days, since he was replacing two doors and adding openers on each door. He only took the daylight hours of one day! I could not believe how fast he was! In addition, he thoroughly taught me how to use the remote openers. I highly recommend them to anyone!

We just bought a home and this company was so understanding as I had to change the appointment time a few times. Then the tech came out and was so kind and helpful. I could not have asked for a better experience and will suggest them to anyone who needs work done on their garage door!

My garage door broke on a Saturday night as I was getting ready to leave for a holiday party. Kelvin was here within 30 minutes. He reviewed everything with me that was happening with my door. He gave me the estimates of what was immediately needed to be done in order for my door to raise and then what I will need to have done very soon. I could see all the problems he pointed out to me and I decided to have everything done. He completed everything that night. I was very satisfied with Kelvin’s professionalism and the work he did. Thank you again.
