Are Garage Door Safety Checks Actually Important?

Your garage door is one of the most important pieces of hardware in your home. Therefore, it is equally important to conduct frequent checks to ensure it’s working perfectly. Here are some reasons why the team at Neighborhood Garage Door Repair conducts safety checks as part of our services to our customers.

Keeps You and Your Family Safe

Most people don’t concern themselves with safety checks until an accident occurs. Everyone wants to prevent accidents from happening. By scheduling regular maintenance and inspections on your door, it ensures everyone is safe.

Sensors Prevent Hazards

One of the most important safety features of your garage door is your photo-eye sensors. These small boxes are located about five inches above the floor on either side of your garage door. They are responsible for detecting any object or person that is obstructing the path of the door.

Testing Your Sensors

If something is in the way of the door’s path, the sensors trigger the door and cause it to reverse. In order to test these features, place a small object, such as a paper towel roll, in front of the sensors. Push the door button to make it close. If the door hits the paper towel roll and reverses, you know the door is working.

Sometimes the mechanism inside the sensor is broken. A professional will replace it for you. Other times, your sensor is clouded and a quick lens cleaning will fix that.

Loose Hardware Causes Injuries

Your garage door is composed of numerous pieces of hardware. Whether the pieces are big or small, each one must remain in working order. The smallest loose nut or hinge can cause problems in the larger parts of the assembly.

There are some ways you can do a quick safety check on the working parts of your system.

  • Check the tension springs to see if they need to be adjusted or replaced. If you notice any gaps in the springs or any rust, you need a replacement right away.
  • Investigate for loose brackets. You can do this by closely watching the door as it opens and closes.
  • Look at your safety cables for fraying. The cables are responsible for holding the door in case of a malfunction. If the cables are worn in any way, they will not provide the safety you need.

Scheduling Maintenance and Inspections

Even if there is nothing wrong with your door, it is important to have it inspected anyway. You can prevent serious injuries by doing a safety check once a month yourself. Some quick things to check include:

  • The balance of the door – be sure that it is properly aligned on the tracks
  • Proper lubrication – lack of lubrication means rusted metal parts
  • A clear view of the sensors

While there are some simple inspections you should do yourself, it is wise to have a professional technician conduct an annual inspection of your garage door. Even if your door never has any issues, it is still wise to schedule periodic inspections.

They sent Doug Fussell out to my house on the day after Christmas! I had only called them three days before! Doug was a premier technician, very thorough and very efficient. I expected him to take two days, since he was replacing two doors and adding openers on each door. He only took the daylight hours of one day! I could not believe how fast he was! In addition, he thoroughly taught me how to use the remote openers. I highly recommend them to anyone!

We just bought a home and this company was so understanding as I had to change the appointment time a few times. Then the tech came out and was so kind and helpful. I could not have asked for a better experience and will suggest them to anyone who needs work done on their garage door!

My garage door broke on a Saturday night as I was getting ready to leave for a holiday party. Kelvin was here within 30 minutes. He reviewed everything with me that was happening with my door. He gave me the estimates of what was immediately needed to be done in order for my door to raise and then what I will need to have done very soon. I could see all the problems he pointed out to me and I decided to have everything done. He completed everything that night. I was very satisfied with Kelvin’s professionalism and the work he did. Thank you again.
