If your garage door makes a loud noise every time you use it, there are ways to make it run quietly. The team here at Neighborhood Garage Door Repair of Cincinnati has a few tips to help you. Here’s what you need to do if your door is noisy.
1. Tighten Up The Nuts and Bolts
As the door opens and closes, the vibrations can cause the nuts and bolts to loosen up and jiggle when the equipment is moving. There are nuts and bolts on the hinges that hold the panels together. Take the time to tighten up the top and bottom of the hinges.
2. Spray Moving Parts
Your door needs lubrication on a regular basis to work smoothly. Use a water-based lubrication and apply to the rollers, drums, cables, and hinges. Prime Flo garage door lubricant is a good option for your system. It is a non-tacky type of grease that is designed to stay clean, rather than collect dust and dirt from your garage.
We recommend you do this two times a year at least. You can also have one of our technicians come out and do this for you.
3. Remove Old Rollers
Look at all of the rollers on your assembly to determine if any are worn out. If the rollers show signs of wear, you will need to replace them. When the rollers start to shred or become misshapen, it will make the door wobble when it moves. The excess shaking can cause noise.
4. Replace the Hinges
Another idea to reduce noise is to replace old hinges that are rusted and damaged. New hardware will tighten up the panels and make the equipment move better.
5. Put Grease on the Garage Door Track
In addition to putting lubrication on the moving parts, you will grease the track itself. This will allow the rollers to glide across without any issues. In order to spread the grease around, open and close the door a few times.
6. Get a New Garage Door Opener
Some openers are designed to have a quieter function. If your opener is old or outdated, then it will likely be louder. Go with a belt drive opener for the quietest function. Chain drives and screw drives are much louder and should only be used for detached garages.
If you don’t want to replace your opener altogether, you can add anti-vibration pads between the mounting bracket and the ceiling. Also, you can put a pad under the bracket itself.
