Common Problems With Garage Door Remotes

If you have tried to open or close your garage door with the remote and it won’t work, there are a few things you can try to fix it. The team here at Neighborhood Garage Door Service of Phoenix, AZ has put together a short guide to help you.

Here are a few of the things you can try:

Replace the Batteries in the Remote

If you can use the button on the wall to operate your door, then the batteries in the remote could be dead. Many remotes take 9-volt batteries. Swap out the old one for a new battery and then test to see if the remote will open the door.

Check to See if The Opener is Plugged In

Your opener plugs into an outlet that is located on the ceiling above the tracks. It is possible that it could become unplugged if something hits it or it becomes loose from the vibrations of the tracks. You should be able to see if it is unplugged while standing on the ground. If it is, you’ll need a ladder to get it back in.

Unplug The Opener and Remove the Batteries

You may need to reset your opener after you have changed the batteries on your remote. To do this, you can unplug the opener and take the batteries out of the device. Let it sit for about 30 seconds. Plug the opener back in and put the batteries back in the remote. Try the door again to see if it makes a difference.

Re-program The Remote

If you have replaced the batteries and unplugged the opener, but it still won’t work, you may need to re-program the remote. To do this, you will need to locate the “learn” button on your opener. This is usually located on the back or side of your opener. You may need to release the light cover to expose the remote.

You may have a red/orange, yellow, green, or purple button. The color will determine what you need to do to re-program your remote. Use your owner’s manual to locate the specific instruction for your model.

See if the Circuit Breaker is Tripped

If you try the button on the wall and your remote and neither will work, you may have a tripped breaker. Go to your breaker box and see if any of the switches have moved over to the right. If so, move it back to the left position. Try your remote again.

You may need to unplug the opener and take the batteries out of the remote to get it to reset if you trip a breaker. Or, you may need to re-program the remote if it still isn’t working.

They sent Doug Fussell out to my house on the day after Christmas! I had only called them three days before! Doug was a premier technician, very thorough and very efficient. I expected him to take two days, since he was replacing two doors and adding openers on each door. He only took the daylight hours of one day! I could not believe how fast he was! In addition, he thoroughly taught me how to use the remote openers. I highly recommend them to anyone!

We just bought a home and this company was so understanding as I had to change the appointment time a few times. Then the tech came out and was so kind and helpful. I could not have asked for a better experience and will suggest them to anyone who needs work done on their garage door!

My garage door broke on a Saturday night as I was getting ready to leave for a holiday party. Kelvin was here within 30 minutes. He reviewed everything with me that was happening with my door. He gave me the estimates of what was immediately needed to be done in order for my door to raise and then what I will need to have done very soon. I could see all the problems he pointed out to me and I decided to have everything done. He completed everything that night. I was very satisfied with Kelvin’s professionalism and the work he did. Thank you again.
