DIY Troubleshooting The Most Common Garage Door Problems

Neighborhood Garage Door Service of Greensboro, NC works with all makes and models of garage doors to solve all kinds of problems. Sometimes, there are steps you can take to fix small issues before calling us. Here’s a checklist to help you with DIY troubleshooting the most common garage door problems.

Door Hinges Are Off

Your door may be operating poorly with jerky motion or starts and stops. Upon inspecting the door, you notice that one or more of the hinges has come off. This can be caused by bent or warped tracks, or the hinge simply breaking.

If the rollers are off track, do not attempt repair and call us right away. If they are still on track, slowly close the door and tighten all the bolts or screws on the hinges. Make sure the tracks are parallel and not showing warping or bending.

Door Closes Partially, Then Reopens

This is often the result of a problem with the safety eye sensors on either side of the garage door opening. If the sensor eyes cannot see each other, the beam between them is broken and causes the door to reopen. This is a safety feature designed to prevent the door from closing on someone or something.

Check the doorway to be sure there is nothing blocking the sensors. Make sure there is no dust or other debris on the sensor eyes. Finally, make sure they point directly at each other with no misalignment.

Door Doesn’t Always Open

If the door doesn’t open every time you use your remote opener, the problem could be with your remote and not the opener itself. Try the hard-wired, wall-mounted button for your opener to see if it works consistently. If it does, you should change the battery in your remote to see if that fixes the problem.

If the wall-mounted button is inconsistent as well, there could be a short in your automatic opener. Have an electrician check the wiring to ensure that there are no breaks, corrosion, or other problems with the wires. If this doesn’t fix the problem, give us a call right away.

Door Slams Shut

You may notice over time that your garage door closes too fast, maybe even slamming shut on the floor. This is very often the result of the spring system that serves as the counterbalance for the door and opener. Check the springs to see if there is any damage, rust, or other issues with the springs.

Extension springs are mounted above the tracks and stretch out as the door closes. Torsion springs are located just above the opening of the doorway and twist to produce torque and slow down the door as it closes. Make sure these are not damaged in any way, but do not attempt to service them yourself. They can be very dangerous.

They sent Doug Fussell out to my house on the day after Christmas! I had only called them three days before! Doug was a premier technician, very thorough and very efficient. I expected him to take two days, since he was replacing two doors and adding openers on each door. He only took the daylight hours of one day! I could not believe how fast he was! In addition, he thoroughly taught me how to use the remote openers. I highly recommend them to anyone!

We just bought a home and this company was so understanding as I had to change the appointment time a few times. Then the tech came out and was so kind and helpful. I could not have asked for a better experience and will suggest them to anyone who needs work done on their garage door!

My garage door broke on a Saturday night as I was getting ready to leave for a holiday party. Kelvin was here within 30 minutes. He reviewed everything with me that was happening with my door. He gave me the estimates of what was immediately needed to be done in order for my door to raise and then what I will need to have done very soon. I could see all the problems he pointed out to me and I decided to have everything done. He completed everything that night. I was very satisfied with Kelvin’s professionalism and the work he did. Thank you again.
