If you have a commercial building of some kind, you may have a high lift door. These garage doors are designed to move along a track that is attached to the wall. The team here at Neighborhood Garage Door Repair of St. Louis works on these types of doors for our customers.
Here are a few basic fundamentals you need to know about this kind of door:
How a High Lift Garage Door Works
A traditional door model runs along a suspended track in the garage. However, a high lift garage door is designed to sit flush against the wall while it is opening and then lifting to a track that’s on the ceiling. The advantage of this type of door is that it allows for high clearance in the garage.
For example, if you had a low clearance door in a body shop, you would have to shut the garage doors every time you lifted a car. That would not be convenient for your business.
What Types of Buildings Benefit Most From High Lift Doors?
Just about any building that has a tall ceiling would benefit from a high lift door. This kind of door needs 36 inches above the height of the door to work. These are some of the types of garages that are best suited for a high lift:
- Car repair bays
- Storage units
- Loading docks
If you aren’t sure if a high lift door is the best option for your building, our team of professionals can come out and look. One of our qualified technicians will come to your business and measure to make sure it will fit. If not, they can give you a better idea.
How Long Does the Garage Door Track Need to Be?
A 12-foot tall standard lift door would have 12 feet of vertical track and 12 feet of horizontal track. That would make a total of 24 feet of track. So, if you had a high lift door, you would need an additional 6 inches of vertical track and there would only be 6 feet of horizontal track. Whatever you gain in vertical, you lose in horizontal. The length of the overall track doesn’t change, the amount for vertical and horizontal.
The amount of high lift is defined as the distance from the top of the door when it is closed to the middle of the horizontal track. However, what you really need to know is how much wall space there is above the door for the track. We suggest that you have one of our experts come out and measure and help you order the right sized door for your building.
