Heavy rains can lead to flooding in low lying areas. It’s important to protect your garage from flooding as best as you can. There are things you can do to keep water from piling up near your home. The team here at Neighborhood Garage Door Repair suggests that you try these things to keep your garage from flooding.
1. Change Your Weatherstripping
Start by inspecting the weatherstripping on your door. If it is old, then it needs to be replaced in order to create a good seal between the door and the concrete. You can install this yourself or have one of our technicians come out and manage it for you.
2. Fix Drainage Problems
Sometimes a house can settle and cause water to pile up around the house. This can present a problem for the foundation as well as for your garage. It’s important to fix any drainage problems you may have.
One way that you can fix this type of problem is to dig a drainage ditch around your house and add a half pipe to send it towards the road. You may need to create a trench in the concrete in front of your door as well.
3. Adjust The Garage Door
When your door closes, it should create a tight seal with the ground. After you change the weatherstripping, you may still notice a gap. If that’s the case, then your garage door opener needs to be adjusted.
The adjustment for an opener is on the sides. There are usually two knobs or dials that you will turn to make the adjustment. When you are making the adjustments, turn the knobs a little at a time and check the door in between every time.
4. Create a Barrier in Emergencies
If you are in a hurricane or tsunami conditions, you should consider creating a barrier in front of your door. This will keep rising waters from penetrating the door. Fill bags with sand or buy sandbags to put down. You will want to make sure the entire width of the door is lined.
Stack several bags on top of each other, especially around the edges. You can put bags on both sides of the door for protection. If you don’t have enough bags, you can lay down sheets and towels on the inside or your garage to soak up any water that may seep through.
