How do I Have a Successful Garage Sale?

Now that the weather is warming up, it is the perfect time to host a garage sale. If you’re like a lot of homeowners, you probably need to clear out your garage anyway, so a lot of the sale items are already inside. The team here at Neighborhood Garage Door Repair put together a few tips to help you host a successful garage sale.

Advertise Your Sale

There are a lot of platforms you can use to advertise your sale. You can post it on places such as:

  • Nextdoor
  • 5 Mile
  • Facebook Marketplace
  • Your personal Facebook page
  • Sign on the road
  • Yardsale groups on Facebook

Making sure that people know where to find is key in a successful garage sale. You can take pictures of your most valuable items to put in the listings to entice people to show up.

Know What to Advertise

It is best to do a few separate listings on social media platforms for the items you are selling. Some things will sell better than others in these places. Make sure you list furniture, items that are in season (ex. grill, planters, yard ornaments, etc.) and small household things separately. You should get some messages for those listings and you can get a jump start on your garage sale or tell them to come during the sale for pickup.

However, not all things get a lot of hits on social media platforms. Don’t waste time listing toys, shoes, clothes, or glassware. People will likely buy those things when they show up to your garage sale, but they won’t make a trip just for them.

Price All of Your Items

While it takes time to price all of your items, it is worth the trouble. This will allow the buyers to know exactly how much something costs and give them the ability to negotiate. It will also make it easy for you to have help selling. Your help won’t end up selling an item for less then you wanted it for.

You can group like items together and put a sign out on the table that tells how much you are asking for each of those things. For example, if you are selling books, put a sign up that says all books are X amount.

Organize Your Sale

Set up your garage like a store. Make sure there are clear pathways so that people can walk around in the room to find what they want. On the day of the sale, you might want to bring some of the items out into the driveway to entice people to come in. Put your largest items in the driveway to get interest from others.

They sent Doug Fussell out to my house on the day after Christmas! I had only called them three days before! Doug was a premier technician, very thorough and very efficient. I expected him to take two days, since he was replacing two doors and adding openers on each door. He only took the daylight hours of one day! I could not believe how fast he was! In addition, he thoroughly taught me how to use the remote openers. I highly recommend them to anyone!

We just bought a home and this company was so understanding as I had to change the appointment time a few times. Then the tech came out and was so kind and helpful. I could not have asked for a better experience and will suggest them to anyone who needs work done on their garage door!

My garage door broke on a Saturday night as I was getting ready to leave for a holiday party. Kelvin was here within 30 minutes. He reviewed everything with me that was happening with my door. He gave me the estimates of what was immediately needed to be done in order for my door to raise and then what I will need to have done very soon. I could see all the problems he pointed out to me and I decided to have everything done. He completed everything that night. I was very satisfied with Kelvin’s professionalism and the work he did. Thank you again.
