Your garage is one of the most important places in your home. It not only acts as a place to park your car but also for storing things. Installing a ladder in your garage is a great idea if you want to keep it out of the way. Here’s a few tips on installing a ladder on your garage ceiling.
Why Install A Ladder On Your Garage Ceiling?
If you own a home, you probably use a ladder for many things. A ladder is helpful for different jobs around your home. However, sometimes a ladder can get in the way and take up space. You can install a ladder on your garage ceiling to keep it out of the way and avoid safety hazards.
When you install a ladder, you can easily bring it down when you need to use it. It’s a simple and convenient choice especially if you use a ladder a lot.
Installing The Ladder
Installing a ladder on your garage ceiling is a simple process of securing brackets in your ceiling. Most jobs take about an hour to complete. The brackets let you swing the ladder up and store it away when you don’t need it. One of the best way do this it to install U-shaped holders. You can use wood and a steel rod to construct the holders.
The U-shaped holders help support the ladder and act like a storage unit. You’ll need to make two of these U-shaped holders for your ladder. Here’s how to get started on the installation.
Gathering Your Materials
The first thing to do is gather your materials. Decide on the height and width that you want the U-shaped holders. This will depend on how high you want the ladder to rest. A good rule is to make it higher than the height of your car.
You’ll need to get these materials:
- At least 4 pieces of 2×4 lumber
- 4 right angle brackets – these should measure 3-5 inches
- 2 PVC pipes
- 2 steel rods
- Nuts and washers to secure the rod and PVC pipe
- Lag bolts
Making The U-Shaped Holders
Measure the U-shaped holders to match exactly. They should hang parallel to one another when they hang down from the ceiling. Next, drill a hole into the center of each piece of lumber and bolt in a right angle bracket. The hole should measure about ½ inch. Then, measure the 21 inches on the PVC pipe and make your cut.
Next, place the steel rod through the PVC pipe and the lumber. You should have 2 pieces of lumber with a steel rod in between. Secure it all together with the nuts and washers. When you’re finished, you should have a nut and washer flesh with a piece of wood on each side.
Find the place you want your holders to go on the ceiling. Then, carefully align the brackets on that place and secure them with the lag bolts. Make sure you leave room for the ladder to slide back.
