Flooding can occur anytime or anywhere. We are coming into the season for spring flooding and hurricanes. Water in your garage can cause a lot of damage to your floor and walls and bring mold and mildew into your home. Your Neighborhood Garage Door Repair team has some ideas to help you keep water out.
Easy Solutions to Stop Garage Flooding
Keep It Clean
Clean the area where the garage door closes. Over time dirt and stones can collect around your garage door. It can prevent it from completely closing. Keeping the area clean ensures your door tightly closes to keep water from getting in.
Keep it Tight
Check your weather stripping. Your weather stripping on the bottom edge of your garage should be soft and flexible. As it ages it will become brittle and crack allowing not only water but also the cold and heat to come into your garage. If your garage door seal is showing signs of aging or wear it is time to replace it.
Keep it Flat
Check the alignment of the garage door. The garage door needs to close correctly so the bottom of the door is level and against the garage door floor to prevent water from coming through. If it isn’t level give one of our team members a call and we can check the door to see what might be causing the problem.
Fill Any Cracks
Fill any cracks in your garage flooring or driveway. The cracks will allow water to make its way into the garage.
Make a Barrier
There are a variety of ways to create a barrier to stop water from getting into your garage. The most common method is filling sandbags. It is an inexpensive way to build a barrier. Filling the bags takes a lot of energy. When the flood subsides you’ll need to find a way to get rid of the contaminated sand.
A variety of different flood bags and flood gates are available. While it is a more expensive option many are filled with water making it easy to have them on hand. They are easy to fill. Empty them when the water subsides and store them for the next time.
You’ll want to use something absorbent behind whichever barrier you use. Towels, newspaper, anything that will catch water that leaks through will work.
If you have a chronic water problem consider installing a drain in front of the garage door area. The drain will capture water before it has the opportunity to get into the garage.
