Neighborhood Garage Door Repair knows how important your family and belongings are to you. That’s why we wanted to write an article detailing some easy tips and tricks to keep your garage secure. For most people, the garage is in direct access to the home and everything you love.
While automatic garage doors have become of great convenience, they are somewhat of a weak link to your security. Garage doors are often equipped with an emergency release cord that comes in handy when the power goes out and you aren’t able to use your remote. However, anyone with a clothes hanger is able to do the same thing and then break into that garage.
Let’s look at how we can make it a little harder or completely eliminate to gain this access. These tips and tricks will be limited to only a certain type of garage door opener, so it’s important to check the make and model of yours. Here we go!
You can always completely disable the emergency release lever to prevent break ends with a coat hanger. However, you should keep in mind that it will prevent your access to the emergency release as well.
Removing The Cord
Instead of completely disabling the release lever, you can always remove the cord attached to it. This will prevent the ease of which a coat hanger can grab onto it from the outside. You can then hide it somewhere in the garage that will be easy for you to find.
Locking The Release Lever
Some garage doors allow you to use a cable tie or thin wiring
Covering The Windows
Using something like a clothes hanger to break into a garage is much easier to do when you can see what you are doing. Think about getting frosted windows or putting up heavy-duty curtains to limit the view from the outside. This will be a deterrent for those who are in a hurry.
Going Old School
Let’s take it back and talk about a garage door that isn’t automatic. While this will increase your security, you’ll also find that it costs some of your convenience. Take into consideration the type of climate that you live in most of the time and if you will really want to get in and out of your vehicle every time you need to get in your garage.
Motion Sensing Lights
Motion detecting lights are great for keeping away burglars at night. Get something bright enough that it scares away the intruder, but doesn’t keep you and the neighbors up at night if an animal happens to trip the sensor. You won’t find a lot of thieves that want to do their work under a bright light.
Securing The Home
Did you know that some people don’t even have a lot on the door that leads from their garage into their home? You should still have the same quality lock on the garage door that you do on the exterior doors of the home. If by chance someone were to break in, wouldn’t you rather them take something from the garage and not something of greater importance from your home?
