All garage doors that were installed after 1990 have safety sensors attached to the bottom of the doorway. This is an important feature on your system and needs to be checked from time to time to make sure it is working properly. The team here at Neighborhood Garage Door Repair put together a few tips to help you inspect your sensors to make sure they are working correctly.
What Are Garage Door Safety Sensors?
There should be two garage door safety sensors that are installed at the bottom of your doorway. The sensors shine a beam between the two. When something gets in the way of the beam while your door is closing, it will stop closing and reverse.
This is an important feature on your door because it keeps your family safe. God forbid that your child, pet, or someone else gets in the way of the door when it is closing and get hurt. That is why these sensors are installed on all newer models. If something breaks the line, it will keep the door from closing.
How do You Make Sure They Are Working Properly?
You should test out this functionality at least once a year to determine if it is working. The safest way to do this is to use something large, like a trash can to push under the door without getting under it yourself.
Use the remote to close your garage door. Push the trash can under it while it is in operation. If the sensors are working properly, it should cause the door to stop and reverse. If it doesn’t stop, immediately pull the trash can out of the way and push the button to open the door.
If your sensors are not working, call one of our technicians. We will get someone out to you right away. Our team understands how important your family’s safety is.
General Maintenance For Safety Eye Sensors
In order to keep your garage door safety sensors in good working order, you’ll need to do maintenance on them about once a year. Here are a few things you need to do to maintain your sensors:
- Wipe down the eye of the sensor with a lint-free cloth
- Make sure the sensors are facing each other
- Inspect the wiring to make sure nothing is exposed or frayed
If you notice any problems with the part, you need to have it fixed right away. One of our technicians is qualified to install new sensors if need be.
