If you are installing a new garage door, then you need to know how much headroom you have. The team here at Neighborhood Garage Door Repair of Raleigh are here give you instructions on how to find out how much garage door headroom you have. Also, we will tell you how much you need.
Traditional Headroom Garage Clearance Space
The traditional headroom clearance tends to require 10-12 inches of space. This will depend on the tracks being either extension springs or torsion springs. It is important that the spacing is accurate so your garage opens and closes smoothly upon the turn on the horizontal tracks. Torsion springs do require extra spacing because of the brackets holding at the end of the torsion bar. This will avoid any scratching on the ceiling and walls.
Low Headroom Clearance
For the minimum headroom door clearance, we really recommend that the spacing is between 4- ½ and 9-½ inches. But we will need to add a double-low headroom track. This will give the garage door enough spacing for a faster turn on the horizontal track. Of course keeping in mind that this is the most user-friendly, low headroom clearance spacing for safety purposes.
Sideroom Minimum Clearance
This is a step many homeowners tend to forget but it is as equally important to take into account. The spacing for the garage opening and the adjacent wall can be 3-¾ inches with a traditional headroom and 6 inches minimum for a low headroom because of the torsion springs being on the outside of the tracks. The Spacing on the adjacent wall can be taking into consideration also after your decision of the spacing used in your garage for your comfort and safety.
There can be an installation for torsion tracks that are 5 inches away from the adjacent wall but it may cause a hazard in the long run or even cause damage to the wall. So we do not recommend it since it may cause a safety issue and the maintenance in the future a hassle to you or any service technician.
Minimum Depth Distance
Usually, for the depth, there isn’t an issue since the garage is built to fit an automobile. But just to make sure the measurements are adequate we make sure the depth is 18 inches longer than the length of the door. This ensures that the necessary equipment and tracks fit appropriately for a smooth opening of a garage door.
The spacing after 18 inches mentioned can be of great use if you decide that you want to create nice storage spacing areas. Plus it will also help to come around vehicles for all passengers exiting the automobile while in an enclosed garage.
