How to Childproof Your Garage

When we have children, our top priority is to make sure they live a healthy life and live in a safe environment. That is why we spend countless time and money making sure the inside of our home is safe, but what about the garage? There is no doubt that the garage can pose a risk for your children if you don’t childproof it.

Are My Children At Risk In My Garage?

There is no question that any garage can entice children to get into things that don’t concern them. Children are curious little creatures and want to explore everything. When you are looking into the safety of your garage for your children, ask yourself these questions…

  • Are chemicals stored in locked cabinets?
  • Are the cars kept locked?
  • Are tools kept out of reach?
  • Do I keep dog food, garbage, and other items cleared up?
  • Can my child get out of the garage easily?
  • Do I keep my garage door maintained and perform inspections?

These are some questions you should ask yourself before you make any changes. This will help you see what you can do to make your garage safer for your children.

How to Childproof Your Garage

Since you now have an idea of what is needed to keep your children safer in your garage, now it is time to be proactive. Here are some practical steps to make sure your garage is safer…

  • Store all chemicals such as paint, weed killer, and other items in a locked cabinet. Keep the key hidden from your children. Most children will try to reach items on a shelf by any means necessary, like climbing. That is why a locked cabinet is the safest bet.
  • Get rid of clutter. Keep a designated area for tools where they are restrained. Lock away animal food if you keep it in the garage. Anything that can trip a child (or an adult for that matter), restrain it.
  • Install a Dutch door in the garage door exit. This way, you can have the top half open to let in fresh air if you’re doing some work and the bottom half will be closed (and hopefully locked).

Of course, you can look around your garage area and see what all can pose a risk in the safety of your children. Feel free to add kind of practical storage solutions to make your life easier and keep your children safer.

How Can I Practice Garage Door Safety?

Garage doors that are automatic can also threaten the safety of your children. Be sure to keep the remote out of reach and do not allow them to play with it. You can also make sure to maintain your door by performing inspections yourself as well as annually by a professional.

They sent Doug Fussell out to my house on the day after Christmas! I had only called them three days before! Doug was a premier technician, very thorough and very efficient. I expected him to take two days, since he was replacing two doors and adding openers on each door. He only took the daylight hours of one day! I could not believe how fast he was! In addition, he thoroughly taught me how to use the remote openers. I highly recommend them to anyone!

We just bought a home and this company was so understanding as I had to change the appointment time a few times. Then the tech came out and was so kind and helpful. I could not have asked for a better experience and will suggest them to anyone who needs work done on their garage door!

My garage door broke on a Saturday night as I was getting ready to leave for a holiday party. Kelvin was here within 30 minutes. He reviewed everything with me that was happening with my door. He gave me the estimates of what was immediately needed to be done in order for my door to raise and then what I will need to have done very soon. I could see all the problems he pointed out to me and I decided to have everything done. He completed everything that night. I was very satisfied with Kelvin’s professionalism and the work he did. Thank you again.
