How To Cut Down on the Dust in Your Garage

Most people use their garage for more than just storing their car. The items in your garage can still collect dust as with other places in your home. The team here at Neighborhood Garage Door of San Diego has a few tips to cut down on dust in your garage.

Getting Rid of Dust

Concrete is part of the foundation of your garage. It’s also a large dust collector. Other factors that create dust include hair, skin cells, pollen and paper fibers, and bits of materials. It’s important to keep up a clean garage to avoid excessive dust. Excessive dust will ruin your items and make it harder to breathe. Here are some ways to eliminate dust in your garage.

Here are the things you can do to get rid of dust:

1. Seal the Concrete

Sealing your concrete is the primary way to keep dust from settling in your garage. Unsealed concrete traps excess moisture, oils, and grease underneath the layers. Over time, these factors cause your concrete to break down. Concrete sealant protects against dust, liquids, and moisture. It also closes any cracks in the foundation that you don’t notice.

There are different types of sealants you can use to coat the concrete. Make sure you chose penetrating concrete sealers. Some types of this sealant include:

  • Siliconate sealers – this sinks into the surface and strengthens the concrete foundation. You usually need to apply one coat with a sprayer or roller.
  • Concrete densifier – this type of sealant is a popular choice for garage flooring. It seals the concrete from dust and liquid damage. Concrete densifiers will change the appearance of your floor to a polished look.

Penetrating sealers bond to the concrete using chemicals. This bond is most effective and long-lasting.

2. Keep Your Walls Clean

Give your entire garage a good scrubbing to keep dust away. Move everything out and wash it from ceiling to floor with an all-purpose cleaner. This should include your garage door. If there are concrete stains, use a concrete cleaner to remove any grease or oil stains. When cleaning the walls, use a microfiber cloth to capture the dirt.

3. Paint Your Garage

If you have a new home, there’s a chance that your walls only have a coat of primer paint. Painting your garage with high-quality paint will make it easier to clean. It’ll also keep dust from settling. Make sure you wash and thoroughly dry your garage before painting. You can use an oil or latex paint. After you paint, add a finisher to seal the paint and make cleaning easier.

4. Maintain Your AC Filters

If your garage has an HVAC heating or cooling system, check if the filter needs a replacement. Dust settles in the filters and clogs them over time. A clogged filter won’t work effectively to trap the dust. Replace your filter to cut down on the dust. A good rule is to change your filters at least once a month.

5. Install Weatherstripping on The Garage Door

Dirt can get into your garage underneath of your garage door. It is best to have weatherstripping on the bottom and sides. If you see any light coming from around the door, then there’s a good chance that dirt is able to get in.

These are just a few ways to cut down on the dust on your garage. The team at Neighborhood Garage Door of San Diego can come and install weatherstripping on your garage door if you need us to. We can check the condition of the old stripping if you already have it installed. Any repair you need, our team can help!

They sent Doug Fussell out to my house on the day after Christmas! I had only called them three days before! Doug was a premier technician, very thorough and very efficient. I expected him to take two days, since he was replacing two doors and adding openers on each door. He only took the daylight hours of one day! I could not believe how fast he was! In addition, he thoroughly taught me how to use the remote openers. I highly recommend them to anyone!

We just bought a home and this company was so understanding as I had to change the appointment time a few times. Then the tech came out and was so kind and helpful. I could not have asked for a better experience and will suggest them to anyone who needs work done on their garage door!

My garage door broke on a Saturday night as I was getting ready to leave for a holiday party. Kelvin was here within 30 minutes. He reviewed everything with me that was happening with my door. He gave me the estimates of what was immediately needed to be done in order for my door to raise and then what I will need to have done very soon. I could see all the problems he pointed out to me and I decided to have everything done. He completed everything that night. I was very satisfied with Kelvin’s professionalism and the work he did. Thank you again.
