How to Install a Second Torsion Spring

Why do you need to change your garage door system to have a two spring system versus one? Safety is the main reason. Here at Neighborhood Garage Door Service of Denver, CO, we are concerned about the safety of your family.

There are other reasons that you may consider this options as well such as:

  • Less wear and tear on your door
  • Longer use
  • Greater value at lower cost

Here’s how you can add a second garage door torsion spring to your current system.

Cut Power Supply

Before working on an equipment that draws power, you need to cut the power supply. You can do this by unplugging the opener. Also, you can flip the breaker if that is more convenient for you.

Once the power supply has been cut, you will need to disengage it completely from the door. Using a vice grip, you will grip the track so that the door stays in place when you are winding the spring.

Loosen The Winding and Stationary Cones

Now that the door is stabilized, you can loosen the winding and stationary cones. These are attached to the shaft and bracket. Use the necessary tools to loosen it enough so that there isn’t any tension on the spring.

Mark Where The Cable Drums and Shaft Are

Using a marker of some kind, mark where the cable drums and shaft are. This way, you will know where they are when you replace them. Once you have it marked, you can loosen the drums and slide it out of the shaft.

At this point, you will need to remove the broken spring. When you are replacing it with the new torsion spring, make certain the the wind of the spring is the same direction as the one that you took out.

Slide in The Second Spring

Take your second torsion spring and slide it into place next to the first one. Add a bit of lubrication to the springs to make sure that it is wet.

Reset Cable Drums

You will need to reset the cable drums and then replace the cable that you took apart. Secure the stationary cones together where the spring action bracket is located.

Wind the Springs

The last step is to wind the springs and secure the assembly using setscrews. These are to be screwed into the shaft. Plug the opener back in or flip the breaker so that you can regain power to your overhead door.

They sent Doug Fussell out to my house on the day after Christmas! I had only called them three days before! Doug was a premier technician, very thorough and very efficient. I expected him to take two days, since he was replacing two doors and adding openers on each door. He only took the daylight hours of one day! I could not believe how fast he was! In addition, he thoroughly taught me how to use the remote openers. I highly recommend them to anyone!

We just bought a home and this company was so understanding as I had to change the appointment time a few times. Then the tech came out and was so kind and helpful. I could not have asked for a better experience and will suggest them to anyone who needs work done on their garage door!

My garage door broke on a Saturday night as I was getting ready to leave for a holiday party. Kelvin was here within 30 minutes. He reviewed everything with me that was happening with my door. He gave me the estimates of what was immediately needed to be done in order for my door to raise and then what I will need to have done very soon. I could see all the problems he pointed out to me and I decided to have everything done. He completed everything that night. I was very satisfied with Kelvin’s professionalism and the work he did. Thank you again.
