Torsion springs are a vital part of your garage door system. If they break, you will need to replace them right away. The team here at Neighborhood Garage Door of Cleveland advices that you do not change your own springs unless you know what you are doing. The springs hold a lot of tension and can cause fatal damage if you do not handle the part correctly.
However, if you are a person that knows how to make this type of repair, use this information to order a replacement spring.
1. Determine The Wind Direction
To start with, you’ll need to look at your current spring to determine which way it winds. It will either wind towards the left or the right. A right-hand spring coils clockwise. A left-hand spring coils counterclockwise.
2. Measure the Spring Diameter
You’ll need to measure the inner diameter of the spring. There may be an ID number on the inside of the coil.
3. Measure the Wire Size
You’ll need to measure the length of the wire in inches. Generally, there are up to 20 coils on a spring. If the spring is broken in half and in two separate pieces, you’ll need to measure both pieces and round to the nearest whole number. If your spring is uncoiled, you need to measure that part as well.
4. Use the Garage Door Spring Size Chart
Once you have your measurements together, you’ll need to use the size chart to order the right part. Here’s a guide you can use:
|Length of 20 coils||Wire size||Length of 20 coils||Wire size|
|2 1/2||.125||5 3/4||.289|
|2 3/4||.135||5 7/8||.295|
