Organization Tips For Your Garage

As we head into summer, it might be time to tackle that garage. Many of us use our garage for storage and if you aren’t careful, it can become almost impossible to get to your car. The team here at Neighborhood Garage Door Repair put together some tips to make sure you’re successful at organizing your garage.

Create A Plan

Some of the best intentions fail without a proper plan. If you want your organizational weekend to be a success then make sure you take the time to lay out a plan.

Set Aside Time

You’ll want to make sure you set aside a couple of back-to-back days such as over a weekend to tackle the project. You’ll want to make sure you have enough time to tackle the entire project so that your stuff isn’t sitting out for too long. You’ll also be more likely to finish the project if you keep working on it.

Check the Forecast

Make sure you check the forecast when you’re making your plans. You’ll want to make sure there’s not going to be any rain so the stuff you pull out of the garage doesn’t get wet. Also, make sure you don’t do it during a heatwave since you’ll be working out in the sun.

Will You Need Help?

Plan ahead and recruit people to help you if you think you’ll need help. Are there objects that are too heavy for you to lift alone? Sometimes, it also helps to hire a professional that can give you direction.

Gather Your Supplies

Create a list of the categories of the types of items that you store in your garage. Create labels with those items on them. Don’t forget labels for stuff you’re donating and stuff you’re throwing out. Gather enough boxes so you have one box for each category. Attach the labels so you can easily sort stuff you bring out of the garage.

What Organizational Items Will You Need?

It helps to walk out into your garage and try to visualize how you use your garage space. You’ll want to plan ahead for the big day by purchasing any shelves you’ll need to organize the stuff you’ll be keeping in there. It helps to quickly draw out your garage and fill in the space your cars will need as well as where the organizational units will go. It helps to group items together, such as all your garden equipment in one area and tools in another.

Don’t Forget About Your Car

As you plan to go through stuff, don’t forget about your car. Afterall, your garage is designed to hold your car and keep it safe from the elements. It’s nice to store stuff in your garage but make sure there’s enough room for your car!

Bring Everything Out of Your Garage

First, park your car outside of the garage and then bring out all of the bigger items out into the driveway. Next, pick a corner to start in and work your way through the entire garage. Gather items and sort them into the boxes they go into. Make sure you throw away any broken items or items that are missing pieces.

If it’s something you haven’t used in a year, then just donate it. Check dates on chemicals and paints and make sure you properly dispose of them if they’re too old. This is also a good time re-evaluate what you keep in your garage and remove unnecessary items.

Put Everything In Its Place

Now, it’s time for the best part when you get to put everything in its place. Make sure the organizational system you picked will keep your items easily organized. Make sure people who will use items from your garage will be able to easily put things back where they go.

Your organizational system will only work if it’s easy to follow. This also is a great time to further evaluate what you keep in your garage and possibly get rid of more stuff. If it doesn’t have a place then chances are high you don’t need that item.

They sent Doug Fussell out to my house on the day after Christmas! I had only called them three days before! Doug was a premier technician, very thorough and very efficient. I expected him to take two days, since he was replacing two doors and adding openers on each door. He only took the daylight hours of one day! I could not believe how fast he was! In addition, he thoroughly taught me how to use the remote openers. I highly recommend them to anyone!

We just bought a home and this company was so understanding as I had to change the appointment time a few times. Then the tech came out and was so kind and helpful. I could not have asked for a better experience and will suggest them to anyone who needs work done on their garage door!

My garage door broke on a Saturday night as I was getting ready to leave for a holiday party. Kelvin was here within 30 minutes. He reviewed everything with me that was happening with my door. He gave me the estimates of what was immediately needed to be done in order for my door to raise and then what I will need to have done very soon. I could see all the problems he pointed out to me and I decided to have everything done. He completed everything that night. I was very satisfied with Kelvin’s professionalism and the work he did. Thank you again.
