There are a lot of decisions to be made when building a new home. One of those questions is whether your garage should have one large door or two smaller ones. Your Neighborhood Garage Door Repair team has put together some of the advantages and disadvantages of each to help you make the best decision. Both garage doors can look good on your home.
Two Single Garage Doors
Two single garage doors need garage area that is at least 22 feet wide. Narrower than that you’ll have a difficult time getting your car doors open wide enough to get out of your car comfortably. The extra space may need more land if you are building a new home.
Aesthetically and architecturally, two garage doors look better than one large garage door. With one large garage door, visually from the street, all you see is the garage door. The smaller doors are usually preferred by couples without children or single people.
Two single garage doors limit exposure to outside weather and the public. A smaller opened door allows a smaller amount of outside air getting into the garage. This reduces your heating and cooling bills. Using the garage for things like a gym, workspace area, or storage exposes less to the public when you open your garage door.
Take into consideration the size of vehicles you prefer to drive. Single garage doors offer less space. Very large vehicles may be difficult to get in and out of the smaller doors.
Costs are pretty similar for two smaller or one larger door except for needing a second garage door opener. Check on installation costs as it may cost more for two doors compared to one wide door. A double door also means double the maintenance costs. But when you have two garage doors and one malfunction you’ll still be able to get at least one car out.
Double Wide Garage Door
A double-wide garage door should be a minimum of 18 feet wide and 22 feet deep. There is more usable room with one double-wide garage door. This is helpful for families with infants and children still using carriers or car seats. If you drive larger vehicles it is easier to drive into a double-wide door rather than a smaller door space. While a double-wide door is not as visually appealing, it can be made more attractive with a pergola, ivy, or plants.
While you’re only maintaining one garage door, one door is heavier. That puts more strain on the system causing it to wear out faster. If the door malfunctions you are limited in your ability to get out of the garage. If the garage door gets damaged it will be more expensive to repair or replace a large door.
