Neighborhood Garage Door Repair is here for any questions that you might have in your garage door journey. While we know that safety is important, we also find that a lot of people don’t know what safety features their door has. We hope that this article helps you know what to look for and how your door protects you.
Auto-Reverse
In the 1980s and some of the 90s, some children’s lives were lost and many more injured because the automatic garage doors didn’t stop closing when they were met with resistance. In 1992 federal law started requiring that garage door had some sort of entrapment protection. It is most often known as an auto-reverse feature.
This is one of the most crucial safety features for your door and this is how it works. Your garage door has special sensors that are about to detect any kind of obstruction in its path. If it happens to detect a hindrance, it stops closing and reserves until it is completely open.
If you want to test this feature simply place a strong 2X4 where the door will make contact while closing. You will then close your door and when the door makes contact with the board, it should auto-reverse to completely open. If for some reason, it does not reverse and continues to try to close, you need to contact a garage door company immediately to have it fixed.
Motion Detection
The motion detection safety feature offers more security in two ways. If a person or a vehicle passes the motion detector sensors, the lights of the garage will automatically come on for around 5 minutes. This will make sure you have good lighting for getting from your car to your home without tripping over anything.
This can also be an additional feature to help with security. If a burglar tries to break in via your garage, they will trigger the motion detector. Quality lights are one of the best burglar deterrents, according to home security experts.
Manual Controls
You might be wondering why you would want or even need a manual control on a garage door with a motorized opener. However, if there is a power outage and you need to get your car out of your garage, the motor isn’t going to work. If you know how to work the manual control, you can simply open the door by hand.
There is an override feature on your door that can disconnect the garage door from the electric motor. Since the garage door will only be disconnected from the power and not the tracks, it can easily be lifted by your hands. Once the power is back up, you just reconnect the electric system to the motor.
Maintenance
Now that you are aware and have an understanding of the different feature of your door, you should know that keeping them functioning correctly is important. You will want to make sure you are getting both your garage door and opener maintained by a professional once a year. This will help prevent accidents and costly repairs down the road.
