If you are a California native or are new to the state, you may or may not be aware of a bill that passed in September of 2018. The bill states that every automatic garage door that is sold after July 1, 2019, in the state of California includes a battery backup. Neighborhood Garage Door repair is here to help explain the reasoning behind this new law.
Did you know that at least 5 people in Northern California wildfires died in 2017 because they were not able to open their garage door after their power went out? Imagine trying to get to safety and finding that your garage door that has helped protect valuables in the past is the thing preventing your escape. Senate Bill 969 is in place to help prevent others from losing their lives.
If any company is found to now be following this law after July 1, 2019, they will be faced with a civil penalty of $1000 for every opener they sell without a backup battery. This isn’t an option anymore, this is something companies must do in order to comply with the law.
Headed In The Right Direction
There have many some stories of neighbors having to help their elderly neighbors who didn’t have the strength to raise their doors manually. Think about those with disabled family members who have special vehicles that might be locked in a garage and running out on foot isn’t an option. While it is still going to take some time for all existing garage doors to add on the battery backup, this will definitely help get everyone headed in the right direction.
Support Wasn’t Found Everywhere
The bill passed with votes totaling 103 in favor and 7 opposing. It makes you wonder why anyone would even be against this. A trade group, Door & Access Systems Manufacturers Association International, argued that the doors would require more routine maintenance and the bill should be more clear on the fact that “backup batteries are not designed to serve as life safety devices.”
Basically, the group was saying that your garage door shouldn’t be your only means of leaving your home in the event of an emergency. While we understand what they are saying, it’s important to remember the lives that were already lost due to this issue. We don’t know what kept them from escaping in a different part of the house. Sometimes a vehicle is going to be needed to get somewhere fast.
Routine maintenance will be an important part of keeping up the integrity of your new garage door opener. You should always come up with a plan for your family. Run through said plan to ensure you all are ready in the event of an emergency. Track escape routes and be sure that you are away of how to work your new device.
