Why The Garage Door Won’t Stay Closed

closed garage door

Your garage door is the largest port of entry to your home and if for some reason the door won’t stay closed you, your family and your valuables could be in danger! If your garage door is refusing to close it’s important to get it fixed as quickly as possible and that is where our team at Neighborhood Garage Door Repair can help. Here are some reasons why your garage door may not be closing all the way and what you can do to fix it.

5 Reasons Why Your Garage Door Won’t Stay Closed

Your garage door is a complicated machine with many moving parts. This means there are a plethora of possible reasons why your garage door won’t close. Here are some of the common issues we run into when working on our customers’ garage doors:

1. Something Is Blocking the Path

If your garage door won’t close all the way the first thing you should do is check to make sure there is no clutter surrounding the sensors. With so much stuff stored in your garage, sometimes things move around or get placed where they shouldn’t be. Items blocking the sensor will prevent your garage door from closing all the way.

2. The Sensor Eyes are Dirty

Most garage door openers have two sensors, a receiving sensor, and a sending sensor. These sensors communicate with one another to let each other know it’s safe to close and open the garage door. If the sensor eyes become dirty, they may have difficulty sending and receiving signals, leaving your garage door open.

3. There’s an Issue With the Limit/Travel Setting

This is the most common reason as to why a garage door won’t stay closed. The limits tell the garage door that it’s open when the door is actually closed. This leads to your garage door continuing its opening motion even though it’s supposed to be closed.

Every garage door opener has travel adjustments, making this an easy fix. Refer to your manufacturer’s manual to figure out how to adjust the travel settings. If you no longer have a manual, the info may be attainable online or over the phone.

4. Garage Door Sensors Aren’t Aligned Properly

If your garage door sensors aren’t aligned properly, your garage door won’t close, it’s as simple as that. Your garage door opener should emit two lights, one yellow and one green. The yellow light is the sending receiver and the green light is the receiving receiver. If you aren’t noticing these lights or the lights are blinking, your sensors need realignment.

5. Damage to the Tracks or Springs

In some extreme cases, your garage door may have difficulties closing due to damage. Check around to see if you notice any damage, dents, chipping or rust. Other signs of damage include loud noises, slow response times and visibly shaking.

They sent Doug Fussell out to my house on the day after Christmas! I had only called them three days before! Doug was a premier technician, very thorough and very efficient. I expected him to take two days, since he was replacing two doors and adding openers on each door. He only took the daylight hours of one day! I could not believe how fast he was! In addition, he thoroughly taught me how to use the remote openers. I highly recommend them to anyone!

We just bought a home and this company was so understanding as I had to change the appointment time a few times. Then the tech came out and was so kind and helpful. I could not have asked for a better experience and will suggest them to anyone who needs work done on their garage door!

My garage door broke on a Saturday night as I was getting ready to leave for a holiday party. Kelvin was here within 30 minutes. He reviewed everything with me that was happening with my door. He gave me the estimates of what was immediately needed to be done in order for my door to raise and then what I will need to have done very soon. I could see all the problems he pointed out to me and I decided to have everything done. He completed everything that night. I was very satisfied with Kelvin’s professionalism and the work he did. Thank you again.
