Why Won’t My Garage Door Open When I Push The Wall Button?

Beige house with snow on the ground

Have you ever pushed the button on the wall and your garage door didn’t open or close? If that is something you are dealing with, you can try these tips to figure out what’s wrong. The team here at Neighborhood Garage Door Repair are experts in the industry, and our technicians know exactly how to fix this type of problem. These are some of the things we would try:

Cut The Power to The Wall Mount and Opener

Prior to working with the wall mount or opener, cut off the power. You can do that by flipping the switch in the breaker box that powers these two things. Also, go ahead and unplug the opener just to be on the safe side.

Check The Wiring to See if it is Loose

In order to see if the wires are a little loose, you can gently pull on them. Be careful not to pull them out or loosen them up. Many openers have more than one set of wires, so you need to check both sets.

If you think they are loose, then you will need to use a screw to tighten the wires. Or, you may need to push in the connectors depending on the type of opener you have.

Determine if the Wiring is Bad

To determine if the wires are bad, you can unscrew the connectors and touch the head of a screwdriver to the two screws. If you have the push-in type of connectors, then you will need to remove the wires and connect it to the terminals. If the door works when you do this, then you know the wires need to be replaced.

Test the Button to See if it is Bad

In order to see if the button is bad, you will need to disconnect the wires from it. Then, touch the bare end of the wires together. If the door works, then it means either the wires were not tight enough or the button is bad. Be sure you screw in the wires or push-in the connectors just to make sure the wires are not the problem.

However, if you’ve already tested the wires, then you know the button needs to be replaced. You can either use the same type of button that you currently have installed, or you can get a doorbell button to replace it.

Garage Door Opener Still Won’t Work?

After trying all of these ideas, you may still be coming up short. If that’s the case, then there’s a good chance that the opener itself needs to be replaced. Or, maybe the opener can be repaired to avoid the additional charge of the parts and labor.

They sent Doug Fussell out to my house on the day after Christmas! I had only called them three days before! Doug was a premier technician, very thorough and very efficient. I expected him to take two days, since he was replacing two doors and adding openers on each door. He only took the daylight hours of one day! I could not believe how fast he was! In addition, he thoroughly taught me how to use the remote openers. I highly recommend them to anyone!

We just bought a home and this company was so understanding as I had to change the appointment time a few times. Then the tech came out and was so kind and helpful. I could not have asked for a better experience and will suggest them to anyone who needs work done on their garage door!

My garage door broke on a Saturday night as I was getting ready to leave for a holiday party. Kelvin was here within 30 minutes. He reviewed everything with me that was happening with my door. He gave me the estimates of what was immediately needed to be done in order for my door to raise and then what I will need to have done very soon. I could see all the problems he pointed out to me and I decided to have everything done. He completed everything that night. I was very satisfied with Kelvin’s professionalism and the work he did. Thank you again.
