Why Won’t The Opener Stop Running When The Garage Door is Shut
Most of the time, this type of problem only occurs when you first install a new garage door. The up-limit switch is what controls how far your door closes. Unless something gets bumped or messed with, you should not have this problem happen all of a sudden.
Adjust the Up-Limit Switch
There are two limit switches on the side of your garage door opener. There is an up-limit switch and a down limit switch. If your motor keeps running when you close the door, the up-limit switch needs to be adjust.
Here is how you make the adjustment:
1. Locate the Switch
Look on the side of the opener or under the light cover to find the switches. It could look like two dials on a radio. There should be some type of indication of which one is which. If you aren’t sure which one controls how far it opens, then check the owner’s manual for your opener.
2. Turn The Switch a Little at a Time
You should see which direction you need to turn the switch in your manual or even on the side of the opener. Some of the models will have arrows pointing which direction to turn to make the adjustment. You’ll need to make the adjustment a little at a time. It is estimated that a ⅓ of a turn makes a few inches worth of change.
3. Test The Adjustment
Once you make the first adjustment, you should open your door to see what it does. If it is still running, then you’ll need to turn it further. However, if it will not open up far enough, then you’ve likely turned it too far. That means you’ll have to correct it by turning it the other direction.
What to do if The Motor is Still Running
If adjusting the switch isn’t fixing the problem, then you need to contact our professional company. There could be something wrong with the board on the opener that is causing it to continue running. In the meantime, cut the power to the opener until one of our team members can get out to your location.
You can cut the power to your opener by figuring out which breaker switch controls the outlet it is plugged into. Or, you can get on a ladder and unplug the opener to make it stop running.
