If you needed to evacuate your home and the power was out, would you be able to get your garage door open? Even if you knew to pull the emergency release cord, you might not be strong enough to lift a 150-pound door. The team here at the Neighborhood Garage Door Repair of Orange County believes that for your safety, you should have a battery backup installed on your garage door opener in the event of emergencies.
October 2017 Wildfires Spurred The Discussion
The wildfires that burned out of control back in October is the reason Senator Bill Dodd’s bill requires battery backups on new automatic openers. Unfortunately, 44 people were killed in Northern California by the fires, many of whom were trapped in their garages.
In the midst of a crisis, people tend to panic. Even if you know there is an emergency release cord that disconnects the door from the trolley so it can move, you will have to lift the weight of the door. For that reason, the proposed bill will require all new openers to have a battery backup.
Senate Bill 969 Was Passed in May by The Assembly
Senator Bill Dodd’s bill was passed by the Assembly in May and is not going back to the Senate for confirmation. It is sure to be an easy pass since adding a battery backup is on average $70 more than units that don’t have a backup. That’s not a high price to save the life of people in crisis situations.
Senator Dodd Asks Everyone to Upgrade Their Openers
Since the bill will not include already installed openers, Senator Dodd is asking people to consider upgrading their openers. He recommends this especially for those in Senior communities. The elderly will have even fewer chances of being able to get a door open if their power goes.
Senator Dodd shared that he had a hard time opening the garage door to his home in Silverado when the fires were blazing. That is why he is planning to visit the elderly in Solano County to bring awareness of the concern.
An Oakmont resident reported that she installed a new opener that had a backup battery after the fires. She said she was able to pull the cord and release her door from the trolley, but she wasn’t able to lift the door.
